While it might seem mundane to some, any professional level or serious gambler will say that the playing cards you use make all the difference in the player’s game. The different styles and different types of cards that are available are drawn from such a multitude that it is difficult to make the choice of what type of cards and what brand to choose as well as the inordinate amount of minutia that is associated with this type of decision. This might seem like an extreme exaggeration of the options available, but the selection is actually somewhat important, as the cards themselves can give away much about the player’s hand.
In the case of paper playing cards, they are easily mangled and destroyed, making it easy to understand the argument for plastic playing cards. As paper cards that are used in Texas Hold’em poker tournaments and other professional level events are used, they’re thrown away immediately after each match. This is to prevent cheating or players becoming familiar with the cards. While this is a sound strategy, most private players and even many commercial level poker rooms could not possibly afford this type of practice on a consistent basis and would soon be rendered inoperable. Paper cards are certainly acceptable, but it is important to note that they become deteriorated rather quickly and cannot stand up to the extended use.

In the case of plastic cards, while they are certainly superior in terms of longevity, there are other issues to be taken into account as well. First and foremost, any marks that are made on the cards surface are likely to be around a very long time, considering the nearly indestructible nature of plastic playing cards. In this case, the marks that are naturally occurring in any plastic playing cards will remain for a considerable amount of time, making it simple for players to become familiar with the deck and use this knowledge to their advantage. For this very reason, many tournaments do not allow any type of plastic cards in play, whether it is a Texas Hold’em poker tournament or some other variation of poker such as Omaha.

Making the choice between paper and plastic cards goes far deeper than this particular instance of marking surfaces, but these are the general concerns of most users, as the build up of these types of indicating marks can change the entire game for the player who is familiar with the product.
